Mid-Century Design, Modern Amenities

As a real estate agent and home renovation expert, I've seen my fair share of home renovation projects. But few have impressed me as much as this recent update of a mid-century modern house in Denver, Colorado. This project was truly a labor of love, and the result is a stunning home that perfectly blends classic mid-century design with modern amenities.

Before Renovation

Originally designed by Architect Bruce Sutherland, who was a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, this stunning example of mid-century architecture immediately caught our attention. When we first saw the house, we were struck by its unique architectural features, which included a sloping roofline, floor-to-ceiling windows, and bold use of natural materials like stone and wood. However, the interior was dated and dark, with heavy wood paneling and floral wallpaper dominating the space.

After Renovation

To update the interior, we decided to take a minimalist approach, focusing on light and bright finishes that would accentuate the home's natural beauty. We started by removing the dark mahogany walls because they were too damaged to save.  By replacing these sections of the house with white cabinets for storage and new drywall, we were able to lighten up the interior entry.  The original cork floor and ceilings that are a staple in classic mid-century design were also updated due to age and deterioration. These simple changes instantly transformed the space, making it feel lighter and more modern.

Next, we turned our attention to the bathroom walls, which were covered in outdated floral wallpaper. We replaced the wallpaper with clean and crisp subway tiles, which gave the space a fresh, contemporary feel while still maintaining the mid-century aesthetic.

One of the most challenging aspects of the renovation was preserving the home's unique mid-century floor plan while updating it for modern living. To accomplish this, we made strategic changes to the layout, including opening up the living spaces to create a more fluid flow.

We also updated the kitchen and bathrooms with modern fixtures and finishes, while still keeping the mid-century vibe intact. The kitchen features sleek, white cabinetry and stainless steel appliances, while the bathrooms were updated with clean lines and minimalistic fixtures.

Outside, we preserved the home's unique architectural features, including the sloping roofline and bold use of natural materials. We updated the landscaping, adding low-maintenance plants and landscaping to complement the home's natural surroundings.

The end result of this renovation is a stunning mid-century modern home that perfectly balances classic design with modern amenities. The light and bright interior feels spacious and welcoming, while the exterior is a true work of art.
